Sparkle, Chia-Yu Hsu 5'00" 2011 Standard Brass Quintet Listen “Terrene” comprises six short movements, each bringing attention to the natural beauty of Pablo Center and the landscape around it...The fifth movement, ‘Sparkle,’ is inspired by the images and sounds of fireworks, Hsu says. “I am always fascinated by fireworks celebrations in which many imaginative patterns combine to create an atmosphere of enchantment,” Hsu says. “In this piece, we experience a slow section as we observe the beautiful patterns and fery beauty of each of the fireworks as they slowly fall to earth. However, every fireworks show has its finale - a huge salvo of booms and bangs and stars and comets of color. As ‘Sparkle’ draws to a close, we feel the finale of fireworks as the music reflects the launching and exploding of shells one after the other, leading to a grand finale in texture and tone.” - Information about Sparkle obtained from article interviewing Chia-Yu Hsu Glinting, Glancing Shards, Eleanor Alberga 12' 1997 Saxophone Quartet (SATB) Commissioned and premiered by the Delta Saxophone Quartet Click here for more information about the work and contact information. Five Miniatures, Julia Seeholzer 6'30 2014 Duet for Marimba and Cello Audio Video Perusal Score & Purchasing Five Miniatures was conceived as a non-developmental collection of tiny ideas, hence the title, and the lack of rambling program notes. While movements 1, 3, and 5 are quite closely related, movements 2 and 4 serve as contrasting interludes that give space and variety to the piece's overall structure. More specifically, the third movement was composed in such a way that each instrument’s part can stand alone - these parts are therefore used separately as the first and last movements of the piece. Five Miniatures was composed for cellist Evan Kahn. Program notes by composer. Terezin Ghetto Requiem, Sylvie Bodorova
